New York, 1960s

Elevator, Madison Avenue

Man: Work is the most important thing we do!

[smoke]

Other Man: It makes us each important.

Other Man: We may be married but we’ll never grow up!

[smoke]

Other Man: Women! Always going to the bathroom together, watching the kids, and nagging! They’re so different!

Other Man: Haha, yes, it’s true! Let’s leer at the secretaries on our way in!

[smoke]

Other Man: Typical tuesday! Scotch, strippers, and infidelity around three? Fellas?

Man: You betcha! See you guys at the bathroom.

Office Hallway, Ad Agency

Joan “Everything I do is Sultry” Holloway: This is your desk. We’re going to be great frenemies.

Peggy “I’m new, naive, and eager to please but will never give up my soul and inner character” Olson: Thanks Joan, this is so overwhelming! I don’t know why you think I’m a threat.

[smoke]

Joan Holloway: Everything you’re doing is wrong.

Peggy Olson: I think I can take it from here.

Draper’s Office, pitch meeting

[smoke]

Don “Everything I do is Sexy” Draper: Listen, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m the main character and I’m incredibly elusive and badass, but every so often you’ll see just enough of my soft side to keep liking me. I’m just as trapped as you are.

Salvatore “I’m so gay I’m straight” Romano: I’d like to see a naked man trapped like you! Hahaha, I meant woman, god I’m just so damn hetero!

[smoke]

Man: So Don, [some reference to a successful ad campaign that wasn’t realized until much after the time frame of the show, cue dramatic irony], whatdayathink?

Don Draper: That’s the worst ad pitch I’ve ever heard. And I’ve worked with Sal for several years! [laughter, smoke] I’d like to fire you, but that’s not how we work here. Meeting over, my terms.

Pete “I want Draper’s job” Campbell: Don, I want your job.

Don Draper: Try to figure me out. But I will crush you.

Apartment, daytime, two naked characters

[smoke]

Woman: That was lovely.

Man: You realize, I’m married. Bye forever.

[smoke]

Home, New York suburbs, picket fences

Man: I’m [grits teeth] really happy.

Wife: So [mashes mouth] am I.

Man: Really, really [lits cigarette] happy.

Wife: [drinks bottle of wine] Truly.

Man: Why would we need to have sex? We already have kids.

Woman: Yes, the kids. They’re my only friends and I hate them.

Man: Wonderful. Night honey.

[smoke]

[I can’t stop watching this show]

Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And they did. From the NYT -

“Then, in remarks from the pulpit, he exhorted them and other politicians to “engage in spirited debate but disavow the low tactics that distract Americans from the most important issues facing our country.” At the end of the service, the two candidates embraced.

“Five months from now,” Luke Russert said a few hours later, “I wanted them to remember that this occasion brought them together.””
